Visakhapatnam has been drawing the attention of people of every stratum since the fifth century BCE. This picturesque city with a beautiful blend of the sea and hills was ruled by many ancient kings and later by the British from the year 1765. At present one of the most important port cities of the country, it is also the Head Quarters of the Eastern Naval Command. The ancient and legendary temple of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swami,  situated on the hills of Simhachalam,  stands testimony  to the  city’s rich culture and heritage.  In 1940s when Visakhapatnam was still a small town of about 70,000 people consisting mostly of fishermen, Ramakrishna Mission was started, especially to uplift the neglected people of this community.

Sri Ramakrishna, who was destined to brighten the whole world with His spiritual splendor, was born in 1836. Swami Vivekananda, His chief disciple established Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 with the headquarters at Belur Math in Howrah district of West Bengal. At present the twin organizations have 211 centres in India and abroad. Swami Shivanandaji (Mahapurush Maharaj), a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, visited the city and stayed here for a few days in 1924, thus laying the foundation for future work here.
